Today is ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY. The elderly in our communities have so much to offer, lived experiences and wisdom. Let's stop disregarding those who are older, or viewing them as incapable or "past it". Remember this person was your age once. Would you like to be treated as invisible if you are lucky enough to get to their age? Then there are the vast numbers of elderly people around us who are experiencing abuse from people who should be protecting them. Financial abuse, physical abuse, emotional and psychological abuse, and even sexual abuse... are more common than we like to admit. Protect our elderly.... They deserve dignity and respect. Stop talking and start acting. Look out for your elderly neighbours, call your grandparents (if you are lucky enough to have them)and check in on them, tell your parents you love them and remember not to take away their autonomy and independence while trying to protect them as they grow frail. Let's look out for our elderly ❤️

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was first launched in 2006 and has been observed ever since to bring attention to the elderly and the challenges they face. It’s been estimated that approximately 1 out of 6 older adults have been subjected to abuse. To help reverse this situation, people must become more aware of these concerns and learn how to respond appropriately. Did you know that 10% of Americans over 60 have dealt with some manner of abuse, or that a family member perpetrates 60% of those cases? We can help by learning more and spreading our knowledge to those around us. #elderawareness
